Place search uses Open-Meteo’s geocoding. Sun times are calculated on your device.

What the times mean

  • Sunrise / sunset — when the top edge of the sun crosses the horizon, allowing for atmospheric refraction.
  • Civil twilight — the sun is up to 6° below the horizon; there’s enough light for most outdoor activities.
  • Golden hour — roughly when the sun is less than 6° above the horizon: soft, warm light loved by photographers.
  • Blue hour — just after sunset (or before sunrise) when the sun is 4–6° below the horizon and the sky turns deep blue.

Times are calculated with the NOAA solar equations and are usually accurate to within a minute for flat horizons. Mountains, tall buildings and elevation change what you’ll actually see.

Check whether those golden-hour clouds will clear with the weather forecast.

Frequently asked questions

When is the shortest day of the year?

The December solstice, around 21 December in the Northern Hemisphere. In Toronto that day has about 9 hours of daylight.

Why is the earliest sunset not on the shortest day?

Because the Earth’s orbit is elliptical and tilted, solar noon drifts through December, so the earliest sunsets come about two weeks before the solstice.

Does it handle the Arctic?

Yes. During midnight sun or polar night it tells you the sun doesn’t set or rise.
